“My medium is all of theatre. Pick a thing, and I do it.
I am a theatre artist. That is the most accurate representation of what I do. Ever since a very early age, I’ve been fascinated with just being involved and being in the building. It started with music and acting and wanting to perform, but it quickly transitioned into a bunch of other interests. Anytime I saw somebody doing something, I was like, ‘Ah! I could do that! I could learn about that thing!’
As I acquired all these new interests through the decades, I never dropped any of the other stuff! Theatre really opened up a bunch of other things, like fiber arts, clothing, crafts, visual art – all of those things became a part of what I do. That desire to produce and direct sort of transitioned me into a role as wanting to be a supporter of other people’s artwork and into arts administration. That also became a piece of the same puzzle.
I am the current managing director at The Goshen Theater in downtown Goshen. We have the ambition to be a community arts hub, where we can support local arts and artists and arts educators by providing a space and resources for artists to meet and for artists to ply their trade. We have a place where we could do gallery shows. We have a space where people can perform. We have spaces where people can rehearse. We have space where people could even teach classes. Obviously, we also want it to be a public events space as well.
I think it’s great being a creative person in Goshen because there are so many creative people in Goshen. There’s a lot to inspire me here. I think that with any of the downtown arts events or downtown festivals, there’s so much to be inspired by in those community events, and it’s such an active community. That’s great fodder for my creative spirit. There’s also great art to be had.”
