“I’m probably the most proud of the murals I’ve done for the city. Those are projects that have taken me months and months to do. The first one I did was on Middlebury Street. I worked with the Boys & Girls Club on that. I did a design where they could do a paint-by-number and help me. That was around 10 years ago. The other mural was at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. That took me two summers to complete.
My usual medium right now is watercolor, but I’ve been working in batik for 20 years. I guess I have a lot of styles, but I can work more abstractly with batik. I guess all of it is abstract because it’s like a style of wax painting; It would be really hard to do realistic stuff.
I went to Manchester University and I was a fine art major with a focus in art history. I also did painting restoration at the Huntington courthouse on a Civil War mural that was on a ceiling there. That was a senior project. I really do love art restoration. That’s why I’m interested in getting murals in downtown Goshen on the historic buildings.
My piece for the new Art Alley is a batik on rayon. It’s wax and dye. I was walking home last winter and I was inspired by some of the stained glass that I saw on the churches on the way. I took some photos of it at night and was kind of imagining what it would look like through to the outside in the evening. That’s where my idea came from.”
